It seems to be working now (I am still wary of potential oversights that might bring it crashing down in flames and requiring a complete redesing, but so far it hasn't happened).

Here's a small clip to show that pigeons' bobbing heads can be syncronised to Plants vs Zombies' excellent music:

The models still require adjustments so that their limbs don't become disconnected when animating. It's just that the parser for the new model structure is not yet complete. In geometric transformation parlance, what is happening is that each mesh is being rotated around the model's whole insertion point instead of each mesh's insertion point. I plan to address this soon, but right now I have a couple of billion papers to read and many pages to write.
